The bride and groom walk into the shrine with Japanese ancient court music.
一、Shubatsu - Purification Rite
To begin the ceremony, this is done to purify the mind and body.
一、Kensen - Rite of presentation of food to Kami-sama
This is a rite in which Kami-sama are offered rice, sake and other foods.
一、Notito-soujyou - Reading of sacred words
Bride and groom from this point on become spouses, they appeal to the Kami-sama,
they give thanks to the Kami-sama and pray for a long, happy life together.
一、Sankon-no-gi - Exchanging of nuptial cups
Together a large, middle-sized and small cup of sake is drank and the spouses then promise to love each other.
・First, the groom drinks the small cup, then the bride drinks the small cup.
・Next, the bride drinks the middle cup, then the groom drinks the middle cup
・Last, the groom drinks the large cup, then the bride drinks the large cup.
一、Mikushi-azuke-no-gi - Entrusting of the comb
The bride entrusts a comb,a symbol of a woman in ancient ages,to the groom. With this,they are united as one and promise to trust and help each other in their new life going forward. This is a unique rite in Akasaka Hikawa.
・This rite is based on the myth when Susanoo-no-mikoto,the ancient god of the storm enshrined in Akasaka Hikawa,defeated Yamata-no-orochi,the dragon serpent with eight heads and eight tails,to save Kushiinadahime-no-mikoto,the goddess also enchrined in Akasaka Hikawa. When Susanoo-no-mikoto was to face Yamata-no-orochi,he changed Kushiinadahime-no-mikoto into the comb and put her into his hair. Susanoo-no-mikoto then successfully slew the dragon and got married to Kushiinadahime-no-mikto.
一、Seishi-houdoku - Reading of the vows
The rite where the spouses face the Kami-sama and personally state their vows.
・The groom using his right hand and the bride her left, together they hold the vows paper.
一、Tamagushi-houten - Tamagushi rite
The bride and groom pray from the heart and place their feelings intothe Tamagushi, offer it before the Kami-sama and worship.
・The Tamagushi is turned to the right, and placed in front of the Kami-sama.
・The bride and groom bow twice, clap twice and bow once more together in
prayer to the Kami-sama.
一、Yubiwa-koukan - Ring rite
The bride and groom consecrate their vows by exchanging rings.
・The groom first gives a ring to the bride then the bride gives a ring to the
groom.
一、Tamagushi-houten - Tamagushi rite
The matchmaker or family representative prays for a long, happy life for the spouses and offering the Tamagushi, worships before the Kami-sama.
一、Shinzoku-Keppai - Bond-tying rite
The relatives of the spouses pour and exchange cups of sake before the Kami-sama tying the bonds of the relationships of friends and family.
